Star Wars, Alice In Wonderland and More.

This weekend I got to spend a fair bit of time working - while I have a couple of pieces I am holding back until I finish them, I have a few pieces I finished below. The best part about this weeks work is I got to work with some pencils from two of my favorite artists - J Scott Campbell and Robert Atkins, I can't say enough how honored I am that I was allowed to work with their lines (Robert Atkins was unbelievably cool about letting color his work)

Anyways, I hope you dig this weeks offerings, and as always, don'f gorget to check out my Facebook and DevinatArt profiles!

This week's inks and colours..

This week has been a very productive week for me, I have had the week off my regular, boring old day job, and spent the week producing work. I threw some colours down on some awesome pencils and inks featuring Red Sonja, Jason Vorhees and the Master Chief. I also inked up a really cool pic of Darth Vader and Emperor Palpatine.

I have also scored a commission to do a tattoo design of Hades this week - so hopefully that will be finished to post next week, and I have also started work on some sequential inking samples, so that is something else to look forward too...

But for now, here is this weeks work!

This weeks pieces.

This week, I coloured an awesome Terry Dodson Young X-Men cover (inked by Jorge Copo), and I threw some inks down on an image of the Master Chief from Halo, penciled by Jeremy Dale. I will have colours coming for the Master Chief image really soon, and if you want to have a go at colouring it - I have a hi res version available at my DeviantArt page, I love to see what people can do with my inks.

The Young X-Men cover featuring Mirage and Magma gave me a chance to play with a few effects (especially on Magma) and just have a bit of fun.

Check them out, and let me know what you think.

This week...

This weekend was a slower one for production (after the monster weekend from last weekend). I did do a some colours for a Freddy digital drawing I found on DeviantArt.

I have also done cover pencils and inks for a Batman story by Daniel Kalban. I was also commissioned over the weekend to do another Halo image for a young guy's 12th birthday, so that will be cool - but I can;t show them until next weekend.

So for now, enjoy Freddy Kruger by Frostdusk

Influence Spotlight: Andrew Wildman

This will be a regular feature on my page where I will talk about influences on my techniques and styles. Hopefully I can introduce you to new artists, or give you a different way to look at artists you already know.

Instead of doing an artist who I directly draw influence from, today I am going to talk about one of the artists who got me hooked on comics in the first place - and that would be Andrew Wildman. The very first comics I ever bought where an issue of DC's Unknown Soldier and Marvel's G.I. Joe in the early 1990's - and G.I. Joe became the first series I would "collect" - this was largely because Wildman's art drew me in immediately.

He may not be everybody's big influence for pencilling technique etc, but he was the first comic artist to grab my attention - of course guys like Jim Lee and Joe Mad are bigger influence on my techniques and styles, but Wildman was my gateway drug, so to speak. Although he is probably better known for his work on Transformers - his G.I. Joe stuff has always been the standout in my eyes.

Check out some of Wildman's art below, and follow some of the links to see more info and galleries by the man himself.

Blog of the Week: Pencil Ink Comic Book Artist 1950's 1960s 1970s 1980s

Blog of the week is a regular Friday post in which I spotlight a blog or profile I have been reading during the week. These may be professional or amateur artists, but they will always be artists whose work I truly admire.

So today's blog of the week is not an individual artist, but a blog that focuses on vintage cmic cook art - more or less form the 1950's-1990's. I spend hours scanning through this blog (and it's updated multiple times a day - so there is always plenty to check out).

The main reason I love this page so much is because it covers the era of comic books from my childhood (and well before), so a lot of the stuff they post is the stuff I grew up reading, and the stuff that got me into drawing in the first place. You can search the massive number of posts by genre, artist or publisher, but be prepared to waste a lot of time!

This page is definitely worth checking out!

Influence Spotlight: Joe Madureria

This will be a regular feature on my page where I will talk about influences on my techniques and styles. Hopefully I can introduce you to new artists, or give you a different way to look at artists you already know.

Today, I am going to take a look at Joe Madureria. I first saw Joe’s work when he did his first issue of the Uncanny X-Men around 1994-95. It was different to most of the art I had seen at the time, and I was taken with his unique style immediately.

The first thing most people notice about Madureria’s work is the Manga influence, he usually has very expressive eyes, and his action scenes always seem to have a hint of Manga about them. For me it was the expressions he put on his characters that was the big draw card. I loved the way he could make the expressions so easy to read, and in my opinion, moved away form the basic expressions that comic book pencillers at the time tended to stick with (a criticism that was commonly leveled at Liefield and Lee, fairly or not)
You can also see an obvious influence from J Scott Campbell in his work, which I believe is not a bad thing.

Make sure you also check out the Joe Mad wisdom in these two posts! Here and Here
