Blog of the Week: Pencil Ink Comic Book Artist 1950's 1960s 1970s 1980s

Blog of the week is a regular Friday post in which I spotlight a blog or profile I have been reading during the week. These may be professional or amateur artists, but they will always be artists whose work I truly admire.

So today's blog of the week is not an individual artist, but a blog that focuses on vintage cmic cook art - more or less form the 1950's-1990's. I spend hours scanning through this blog (and it's updated multiple times a day - so there is always plenty to check out).

The main reason I love this page so much is because it covers the era of comic books from my childhood (and well before), so a lot of the stuff they post is the stuff I grew up reading, and the stuff that got me into drawing in the first place. You can search the massive number of posts by genre, artist or publisher, but be prepared to waste a lot of time!

This page is definitely worth checking out!

Influence Spotlight: Joe Madureria

This will be a regular feature on my page where I will talk about influences on my techniques and styles. Hopefully I can introduce you to new artists, or give you a different way to look at artists you already know.

Today, I am going to take a look at Joe Madureria. I first saw Joe’s work when he did his first issue of the Uncanny X-Men around 1994-95. It was different to most of the art I had seen at the time, and I was taken with his unique style immediately.

The first thing most people notice about Madureria’s work is the Manga influence, he usually has very expressive eyes, and his action scenes always seem to have a hint of Manga about them. For me it was the expressions he put on his characters that was the big draw card. I loved the way he could make the expressions so easy to read, and in my opinion, moved away form the basic expressions that comic book pencillers at the time tended to stick with (a criticism that was commonly leveled at Liefield and Lee, fairly or not)

You can also see an obvious influence from J Scott Campbell in his work, which I believe is not a bad thing.

What have I been working on this week??

So each week, I will post a few samples of the stuff I have been working on for you all to see, I will try talk a little about what has been going on with my art and new techniques I am trying etc.

Blog of the Week: JK5-Inks

Blog of the week is a regular Friday post in which I spotlight a blog or profile I have been reading during the week. These may be professional or amateur artists, but they will always be artists whose work I truly admire.

This weeks "Blog of the Week" is going to be about an inker who I have worked on some colours for recently. The primary inker at JK5 is Jeff Graham, and his partner Kellie doing his black fills for him. I met Jeff via DeviantArt when I stumbled upon his outstanding inks while looking for some quality images to colour. To date I have coloured two of Jeff's inks, but I have plans to do more int he very near future!
